Why was Saul a criminal?
Jimmy/Saul did a lot of illegal stuff--lied to the court about Lalo's identity, helped deal meth, provided information on a murder, and laundered money.
After Chuck's death in the Season 3 finale, Jimmy leans into his criminal nature by selling burner phones and performing various scams. Then, when his law license is reinstated, he requests to practice law officially under the “Saul Goodman” name.
Another flashback saw Saul, then Jimmy McGill, reunite with his late brother Chuck (Michael McKean) in a scene where he brought his sibling supplies and they bickered about Jimmy's work as a lawyer. Taking full responsibility at his trial, Saul was sentenced to 87 years in prison.
His money laundering efforts would very likely be found out which would place him in a conspiracy. He also hired people to help in criminal activity. This would have been found out and he could have faced serious jail time.
Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.
However, as explained in Walter White's Better Call Saul finale scene, the ending is about regret. This is why Jimmy also confesses to the court about his involvement in pushing his brother Chuck to the brink of suicide, even though it technically had nothing to do with Jimmy's RICO case.
He is stuck, and everywhere he turns, cops are surrounding him. He finally takes to hiding in a dumpster, trying to scramble for his phone to call Ed the Disappearer. But his luck seems to have run dry, and he fumbles everything he's holding. That's when the police find and capture him.
In an act of heroism so that he, the king of Israel, would not be captured, Saul committed suicide by falling on his own sword.

Anyone who is serious about the Bible being God's word is going to believe that God both commanded Saul to eliminate the Amalekites and empowered him to have the victory.

He confesses to enabling Walt and admits his role in Chuck's suicide. He is sentenced to 86 years in prison, where he is revered by fellow inmates who recognize him as Saul. Kim is allowed to visit him under false pretenses and they share a cigarette.
